Savory Oatmeal

Oats are a great complex carb, they are filling.. full of fiber including a soluble fiber called beta-glucan. Beta-glucans are beneficial for reducing cholesterol. There is also insoluble fiber in oats.

Soluble fiber attracts water and forms a gel in our digestive tract this helps to delay stomach emptying
 - this helps to regulate blood sugar because the sugar is released slower into our blood stream
 - as mentioned above soluble fiber is also helpful in lowering our LDL cholesterol.

Insoluble fiber goes through our digestion tract intact and adds bulk to stool
 - it is useful for promoting bowel regularity (it helps to keep you from getting constipated!)
 - it helps to move toxins quickly out of our colon
 - it also helps to prevent colon cancer, by keeping the pH in our colon optimal

This or that: Folate or Folic Acid

In this blog I will try to keep things as simple as possible, if you are interested in going more in depth about certain topics I will always try to leave links to more scientific/scholarly/researcher based articles and websites.

The other day I was discussing vitamins with somebody and we started talking about prenatal vitamins and how vital folate is for a baby's development. She was using the term folate and folic acid interchangeably and the more we talked the more it was apparent she thought they were the exact same thing.

Old Post: Chia Seeds

This is an old blog post from my old blog back from 2014, I think it's still pretty good and informative now in 2017. Thanks and enjoy!

‘Ch-ch-ch-chia!’ the tiny seeds responsible for the ‘fur’ of the chia pet are actually jam packed with nutrition.  A member of the mint family and a staple in the diets of the Aztecs and Mayans (chia is actually the Mayan word for strength) . Chia seeds provide the body with complete protein which is not common of seed and grain sources. Chia seeds are also a great source of the Omega 3 ALA (a 'good' fat).  In addition to being a source of protein and omega 3; chia seeds contain many nutrients such as b vitamins, vitamin c, phosphorous, and potassium.
