Top 3 Supplements Everyone Should Take!

Everyday essentials: phone, keys, caffeinated drink, keys, sunglasses and VITAMINS!

Disclaimer: I understand the arguments against supplements and I am not saying you can't be healthy without them. If you feel strongly against supplements I get it :) -I feel they have their place and can be very beneficial to our overall health. ESPECIALLY, when battling any ailment or symptom. I've seen it work. As with anything the quality of the supplements, how you take them and how often all factor in and are very important. Also supplements do not replace healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle :). You don't even have to take them daily many people take them every other day or don't take them on weekends--especially people who still want to take them, but feel they might be overworking their liver.  The brands of vitamins I recommend are vitamins that I like the quality, I have used myself, have been recommended by holistic practitioners, or I have received good feedback from clients. There are many good products in addition to these, just make sure to look at the label!
Also before starting any supplements please check with your Doctor or nutrition professional/RD

Many people don’t believe in taking vitamins and supplements, but I believe that there comes a time when supplements are important. Because of our lifestyles & diets—supplements can help to maintain vibrant optimal help. Prevention is key; it is better to prevent any issue that can arrive from not having sufficient minerals/vitamins, than having to use mega doses to fix issues later. Today I discuss three supplements that I feel everybody should consider taking. There are three more vitamins in addition to these I suggest, but that will be a blog post for another day :)

Jollof Quinoa

Quinoa! [keen-wah]

Quinoa is a pseudo grain, more so it is a seed! (That's likely why it is more expensive at the store than regular grains, it's actually not a grain at all.) It is harvested from a plant called goosefoot and is more related to beets or spinach than your typical grain. I like the nutty taste of quinoa and the fact that it contains COMPLETE protein (many plant proteins aren't), it also has a relatively low glycemic index score (but as with anything what you pair with your quinoa will ultimately determine how it impacts your blood sugar). Quinoa is also gluten free, which is great for people with gluten intolerance

Tea Time: Traditional Medicinals Peppermint & Green Tea Peppermint

If you know me you know I LOVE tea, I've loved tea ...forever; when kids wanted hot chocolate, I wanted tea 😋. As much as I love tea, I am a bit picky about it. I like my tea straight up no milk, no sugar--maybe with honey or real pure maple syrup, but very seldom. I am also picky about the kind of tea I drink.

Vitamin/Supplement Myths

I love MEGA FOOD Vitamins they are on of my favs! Look out for a blog post detailing why these (and vitamins similar to these) were my go to recommended vitamins to clients
Working as a nutritionist at a natural food store, I've heard all sorts of things about the efficacy and the validity of vitamins. Today I share the top 6 myths I have heard:

Savory Oatmeal

Oats are a great complex carb, they are filling.. full of fiber including a soluble fiber called beta-glucan. Beta-glucans are beneficial for reducing cholesterol. There is also insoluble fiber in oats.

Soluble fiber attracts water and forms a gel in our digestive tract this helps to delay stomach emptying
 - this helps to regulate blood sugar because the sugar is released slower into our blood stream
 - as mentioned above soluble fiber is also helpful in lowering our LDL cholesterol.

Insoluble fiber goes through our digestion tract intact and adds bulk to stool
 - it is useful for promoting bowel regularity (it helps to keep you from getting constipated!)
 - it helps to move toxins quickly out of our colon
 - it also helps to prevent colon cancer, by keeping the pH in our colon optimal
