Bone Broth



Today I am sharing how I made Turkey Bone Broth and sharing my snaps from the evening I made it. This is a very informal 'recipe' so no measurements (sorry!). Bone broth is great for clearing out your fridge/freezer and experimenting with veggies and spices. Just eyeball it!


For thanksgiving I purposely bought an organic turkey so I could use the bones to make bone broth. I am sure by now many of you have heard about bone broth and the many benefits or have even seen bone broth powder around the protein powder section of your store.

Bone broth in a nutshell is an abundant source of protein, it is a great source of collagen.. (amino acids make protein and collagen is a form of protein, one of the most abundant proteins in our bodies-it makes up our skin,vessels, muscles, digestive system, etc). Bone broth is a great source of the amino acid glutamine which is healing and soothing for the gut. In addition to being a great source of proteins, bone broth also is full of minerals and is an overall immune booster. It is rich in hylauronic acid and glucosamine making it beneficial for skin and joint health.

How to make Bone Broth: 
I removed remaining meat from turkey bones, broke up the bones and put it in my slow cooker.
I added sage, thyme, rosemary, celery, onions, leeks, green onions, ginger, garlic, parsley
I basically cleaned out all the produce in my fridge. I then added spices for my bone broth I used turmeric and peppercorn

*note* some people slow cook their bones first and then added herbs and spices in the last minute. Personally I like making things as easy as possible so I add everything in the beginning



I then covered the ingredients with water, basically I added enough water to cover ingredients and added about 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (the apple cider vinegar is used to help draw out the minerals from the bones)
I slow cooked on high for 1 hr and then on low for the remaining time, about 10 hrs because I fell asleep. :) There is no need to cook the bone broth that long you can cook for as little as 6 hours on high or 8 to 24 hours on low. I think the longer the better. It also depends on the kind of bones you use--chicken bones you may need to cook less than beef bones because they tend to get softer faster

*note* depending on the quality of your animal scum/foam may form during the first hour of cooking, be sure to skim that off. My turkey didn't produce any scum/foam, but I did get an organic turkey.

Cool and strain out the liquid (I used a sieve). Salt to taste. I then transferred to mason jars. I refrigerated a jar and froze the rest.

*note* after refrigerating bone broth will become gelatinous, that is the collagen/gelatin at work. If your bone broth doesn't solidify that is ok it depends on the temperature at which you cooked you bone broth and how much water you used.

How I use bone broth:

I used the bone broth for a turkey vegetable soup.
In my instant pot I put about 1 teaspoon of avocado oil and sauteed some onion and garlic with spiraled zucchini and carrots.
I then added my turkey pieces and added the bone broth. I then put in some curry powder and cayenne (spice to taste) I put it in my instant pot on slow cooker normal for about 20 minutes.

Other uses for bone broth:
-people sip bone broth as is
-add a bit to anything that might need a bit extra protein (ex: veggies)
-use as you would use stock or broth of any kind
my go to for bone broth is a base for soup and stews after all.. 'tis the season' lol
